Honourable Mayor, Mr. Sorin Apostu,
At your press conference held on the 7th of May, 2009, you announced that multilingual information signs will be posted on historical monuments of Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca in Romanian, Klausenburg in German). You stated that these signs will be written in three languages, Romanian, English and French. You were asked whether Hungarian text would be posted on these signs, and you answered no, reasoning that the Hungarian language is not an international language.
In our view, initiators of this petition, the Civil Engagement Movement (CEMO) and the Transindex internet news portal, your argument is inconsiderate because:
- It is not comprehendible why only English and French languages were chosen, given that German, Italian, Russian and Spanish languages are also considered international languages. Should posting of these signs not bear any “symbolic” messages, but intended for the orientation of tourists visiting Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár, you then should offer statistics supporting your choice of languages.
- The mentality of your argument can be perceived as a reminder of those times when the welcome sign posted at the entrance of the city could be posted in any language but Hungarian. Given that Hungarian citizens played just as important part in the history of Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár as its Romanian or German citizens, would it be a mere coincidence that you do not consider Hungarian and German languages?
Our three nations (German, Hungarian, Romanian) lived for many centuries together in this city. One should give tremendous importance to the existing, valuable and rich traditions, given that these cultural interrelations formed Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár the city as we know it today. Everybody is proud of our city whether that person is Romanian, Hungarian or German, this city belongs to every soul who ever lived or lives in it.
Our city leaders ought to emphasize the multicoloured, multicultural character of Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár and this should be proudly showcased on its streets, buildings and institutions. The long-term city development project, adopted in 2006, contains a whole chapter regarding this issue. Acceptance of the values and the culture of another nationality reflect on the Europeanism and the level of tolerance of a given city, and also reflect on the existing mutual respect of its citizens towards each other.
In the light of the above, us, signatories of this petition reject categorically your arguments, and ask that Hungarian and German text to be included on the signs to be prepared. This way, visiting tourists can recognize all nationalities inhabiting the city and they will have the opportunity to get to know the real multicultural Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár.
He gathering of signatures will be stopped on Wednesday, 21th of May. The signatures will be filed by the CEMO at the Mayor's Office.
